Tax error discovered in GUSD Measure K implementation
GONZALES, Calif. (KION-TV) - A tax error has been discovered in Measure K implementation that led to some property owners being either overcharged or undercharged.
The County of Monterey's Auditor-Controller, Rupa Shah, discovered the administrative error in the implementation of the 2020 Gonzales Unified School District (GUSD) Bond's Measure K property tax, with the Monterey County Board of Supervisors calling for the error to be fixed quickly.
Over the past four years, about $1.8 million has needed to be repaid across those affected.
Measure K helps fund repairs and upgrades within the GUSD with new technology, emergency preparedness, and expanding vocational classrooms for the Gonzales High School and Gonzales Adult School.
Because of the error, the county is prioritizing four actions to rectify the error at hand, from notifying those affected and hosting a town hall in the City of Gonzales to address the issue with property owners face-to-face.
The next steps will be to reimburse those who were overcharged and create a plan for the undercharge that will not add any burden to them. The payment plan will be about 20 percent over the next four years.
