Sick pelicans along Central Coast for second year in a row

MONTEREY BAY, Calif. (KION) -- It is now the second year distressed pelicans are showing up on the Central Coast.

SPCA Monterey County said in a release that it has rescued 16 pelicans since April 11th, with more calls coming in today.

Many of them are being found in unusual areas, including the landfill in Marina, a neighborhood in Royal Oaks, and near Chomp.

SPCA says the pelicans are all thin or emaciated and unable to fly.

A similar pelican rescue happened last April due to a lack of fish in the area. However, KION is being told it's too early to see if the same thing is happening again.
