Suspect arrested in early morning chase ending in Marina charged with attempted murder

MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Updated 4:45 p.m. 3/27/2025 - Monterey Police have identified the suspect in Marina wanted for attempted murder.

The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Marina resident Troyshawn Joseph after being identified using surveillance cameras.

According to the Monterey Police Department, officers responded to investigate an assault with a deadly weapon on North Fremont Street. Once they arrived, they found the victim with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim reported that they were struck by Johnson several times before having a handgun at his head as the suspect pulled the trigger. The gun did not fire and Johnson left soon after.

After checking surveillance footage to identify the suspect's car, the car showed it belonged to Johnson.

It was not until 2:01 a.m. that Seaside Police officers found Joseph's car on Fremont and ORd Grove.

While attempting a traffic stop later on, Johnson took off speeding past 100 miles per hour on Highway 1 before crashing into the "Welcome to Marina" sign near Reservation Road and Highway 1. He then left the car and headed to a wooded area.

As law enforcement agencies continued to look on the ground and in the air, the Monterey Penisula Regional Special Response Unit found Joseph in a room at Motel 6 on Reservation Road.

Joseph surrendered and was arrested on multiple charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Suspect found in early morning chase ending in Marina Thursday morning

Marina Police say that a suspect was located Thursday afternoon from a chase that happened earlier resulting in a shelter-in-place for parts of the city.

They say that the suspect, Troyshawn Joseph, was found in a room with other people and after SWAT and crisis negotiators made contact with him, officials were able to secure the area and safely evacuate nearby hotel rooms.

The suspect peacefully surrendered, according to police, and no injuries were reported to officers, civilians, or the suspect.

At around 2 a.m. Thursday morning, officers from multiple agencies responded to a critical incident that began with an attempted murder in the City of Monterey, according to Marina Police.

They say that once Seaside Police located the suspect vehicle, he initiated a pursuit that ended in Marina.

The suspect crashed at Reservation Road and Cardoza Avenue and then fled the scene on foot, according to police.

Nearby Marina officers responded to help Seaside Police in setting up a perimeter before issuing a shelter-in-place for people in the area, as well as temporarily closing major roads.

"A comprehensive search followed using Marina PD, SWAT, K9 units, drones, and a CHP helicopter with thermal imaging," according to Marina Police. "While the initial perimeter search was unsuccessful, further investigation led officers to a nearby hotel."

The Monterey Police Department is currently monitoring this active investigation.

Shelter-in-place lifted in Marina as search for suspect wanted out of Monterey continues

MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Update 11:34 a.m. 3/27/2025 - Those living in Marina are being asked to avoid the area around Motel 6 despite the shelter-in-place order being lifted.

All roadways near that area remain open as the active investigation continues.

Shelter-in-place issued in parts of Marina after suspect wanted out of Monterey escapes highway pursuit

Marina Police confirm a shelter-in-place has been issued for parts of Marina along Reservation Road and Cardoza Avenue near Drew Street after a suspect escaped during a police chase.

Marina Police say a suspect wanted out of Monterey for an incident around 2 a.m. on Thursday was spotted by Seaside Police. When police attempted to track down the suspect, a chase ensued.

Marina Police say the driver crashed near Reservation Road and Cardoza, prompting a search for the suspect.

Police describe the suspect as a black man wearing all dark clothing who may be injured. He's also described as around 5'8" tall and 215 pounds.

The Highway 1 ramp in that area is closed while the search is ongoing.

The Shelter in Place is specifically for Cardoza Avenue East to Abdy Way.

We've reached out to Monterey Police to find out what the suspect was wanted for out of that area before the chase.
