Santa Cruz looks to extend the wharf emergency declaration

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The City of Santa Cruz is looking to extend the emergency declaration for the partial collapse of the Santa Cruz Wharf by 60 days.

The city issued the original local emergency proclamation on December 24, 2024, a day after the end of the Santa Cruz Wharf collapsed into the sea.

The partial collapse was caused by high surf, leading the former Dolphin Restaurant and restrooms into the ocean. Debris soon began making its way to land.

The proclamation was re-issued on December 31, 2024, and January 7 before being ratified on January 14.

The emergency declaration will continue to aid the city in relief efforts to support businesses affected by the partial Wharf collapse.

The extension would see the emergency declaration last until May 10.
