MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KION-TV) — The Haute Enchilada Cafe and Gallery has been a staple in the Moss Landing community for 25 years, but now they say they're closing the doors indefinitely.

In a statement, the owners explained "the unpredictable nature of the lithium battery storage plant, especially following the recent fire at the Vistra facility, has created uncertainties that we cannot ignore."

The owners also cite financial and emotional losses alongside potential long-term health impacts.

Visitors were hoping to enjoy the cafe on Saturday. Instead, they were saddened to find it closed.

"We had seen the notice that this place was maybe going to close because it's been. the fires, but we are still hoping it would be open today," Monterey resident Mandy Owen said.

One business owner in the area worries the closure may create a ripple effect.

"They generate the clientele down here over their years in business and I don't think that we will see the effects until she opened back up and again," Can't Stop, Won't Stop Foundation president Nicole Gillott said.

Gillott also noticed how quiet the area has been following the fires.

"There used to be a lot of foot traffic down here. That whole side used to be filled with cars from the Moss Landing Inn at the Point. [We] would have families coming down here. Um, no, there's not anybody.

Gillott says their foundation will remain open.

"[I'm] struggling to find my footing here in this town in a business aspect. I love the town so much that I will remain here," Gillott said.

Monterey and Santa Cruz County have reported no risk to public health after conducting environmental testing around the fire site, something locals hope will help bring people back.

"We love coming here and we want the business the business is here to thrive," Owens said.

The Haute Enchilada Cafe and Gallery hopes to reopen to the public when they can ensure a safe environment.
