Caltrans braces for possible storm impacts near Highway 1 in Big Sur
BIG SUR, Calif. (KION) -- As the Central Coast braces for impacts from this week’s storm system, Caltrans is monitoring several key roads including Highway 1 near Big Sur.
Caltrans District 5 says they’ve been prepping for winter storms since last summer including trimming trees, removing debris, and clearing storm drains.
The agency says their maintenance teams will be in “storm patrol mode” over the next several days given the history of mud and rock slides in Big Sur.
"These are the staff that patrol and drive these sections of highway every day. They can detect if there's anything out of the ordinary. And then these are the same people that would be responding 24/7 to any unusual incidents, any rock slides or anything that would involve a road closure," Caltrans District 5 supervisor Jim Shivers said.
Shivers adds they’ve made tremendous progress at Rocky Creek and the viaduct project due to the fairly dry winter season.
"We're making a very steady progress on that. The good weather has certainly helped the effort with that as far as the rest of the corridor," Shivers said. "We're still working very carefully in and around the regent slide area and for the rest of Highway 1."
He is also urging drivers to check if their tires, brakes, and windshield wipers are all in working order ahead of the storm.
