Central Coast lawmakers react to passing of former President Jimmy Carter
PLAINS, Ga (KION-TV/CNN) -- Jimmy Carter, the longest living former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has passed away at the age of 100.
Carter's death was first reported by The Washington Post who cited Carter's son, James E. Carter III.
The Carter Center, founded by the former President and his wife, Rosalynn, also confirmed the passing of Jimmy Carter on social media shortly after.
Carter was the 39th US president, serving one term in office.
The former president began home hospice care in February 2023 after a series of short hospital stays.
Former first lady Rosalynn Carter died on November 19, 2023.
Congressman Jimmy Panetta shared a photo of the day he met Carter back in the 70's, saying “Jimmy Carter exemplified humility, grace, and selflessness as a president, public servant, and citizen of a nation that he loved with his whole heart. He didn’t just call on his fellow Americans to live up to our shared values as a country, he led by example, with a character and patriotism that we must demand from our leaders. America mourns the passing of President Carter and we must strive to live up to his legacy.”
Assemblymember Dawn Addis also issued a statement, saying in part "President Carter exemplified the best of leadership: integrity and humility, environmental stewardship, and peace."
