Monterey Bay F.C. eliminated from playoff contention

Monterey Bay FC

SEASIDE, Calif. (KION) - Monterey Bay F.C. didn’t have a chance to take the field before having its playoff fate sealed on Wednesday.

A 2-0 win over El Paso Locomotive lifted Orange County SC from eighth to sixth place in the Western Conference, leaving the Union too far south of the playoff line in eleventh.

With two matches left, Monterey Bay stands at 8-10-14, with 34 points on the season. The side was eliminated from playoff contention after falling seven points below the line.

The Union had been on a three-point season-saving stretch in which they beat Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 and played to a 2-2 draw against Sacramento Republic FC. But, Orange County’s win over El Paso ended up cutting the playoff push short, just two weeks out from the postseason.

Orange County hasn’t clinched yet but now jumps to sixth place.

Phoenix moves to seventh, while Oakland falls to eighth.

As for Monterey Bay, the Union will now face Colorado Springs in the side’s last home match before facing Tulsa on the road in the season finale.

The Crisp and Kelp will now look ahead to year four where they are hoping to make their first postseason appearance in club history.
