Beached baby orca whale at Carmel State Beach dies

CARMEL, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A baby orca whale that was beached at Carmel State Beach has died, according to officials with the Marine Mammal Center.

The orca died while being transported on Tuesday. What caused the young whale to die is still unknown at this time.

On Tuesday personnel from the Point Lobos Foundation, The Marine Mammal Center and State Parks were attempting to rescue the stranded orca.

Their efforts to get the whale back into the ocean were unsuccessful and the whale was then transported to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. The orca did not survive the transport.

A spokesperson for The Marine Mammal Center says that a necropsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine how the whale died.
