CHP: 19-year-old from Salinas killed in early morning crash identified
SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The CHP confirmed a 19-year-old from Salinas was killed in an early Saturday morning crash on the north side of the city.
The crash was reported to the CHP just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Russell and Harrison roads.
According to the CHP, the victim has been identified as Justo Feliciano Esteban of Salinas.
According to new information from the agency, a Honda SUV was traveling north on Main Street toward the intersection while a Lexus sedan was traveling south on Harrison Road toward the same intersection.
Investigators said the Lexus attempted to make a left turn onto Russell Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the two cars collided in the intersection.
The CHP said a 19-year old man from Salinas sitting in the front right passenger seat of the Lexus was pronounced dead at the scene. He will be identified by the Monterey County Coroner's Office once next of kin is notified.
The driver of the Lexus, a 27-year old man from Salinas, was not hurt in the crash, according to the CHP. The Honda's driver, a 42-year old Salinas woman, suffered suspected minor injuries but refused medical transport.
The CHP did not indicate if either vehicle was running a red light at the time of the collision.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in this crash.
