Patio fire nearly spreads to home in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Santa Cruz Fire confirmed a structure fire in Santa Cruz on Wednesday afternoon.

Crews arrived at the scene on Murray Street to a partially extinguished exterior fire on the building. The fire department confirmed that there were reports about fireworks in the area and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Santa Cruz Police, the fire department and Santa Cruz Boardwalk security are all collaborating on this investigation, according to Santa Cruz Fire.

"Fortunately from the heroic actions by the neighbors who were able to use a garden hose and keep the fire in check until the fire department was able to arrive, the damage was confined to just an exterior patio and belongings on the patio," said Santa Cruz Battalion Chief Todd Meyer.

Police and the fire department are tracking down surveillance footage to help with the investigation.

"There are actually no fireworks that are legal inside the city of Santa Cruz," Meyer reminded the community.
