County of Monterey say repairs on the way for pothole problems on Old Stage Road

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Pothole problems continue in Monterey County.

People who travel Old Stage Road daily say it needs repairs, a route heavily traveled by the farm working community.

It's never a smooth ride for travelers like Antonio Acosta on Old Stage Road.

"If you are, driving speed limit, if possibly there's a high risk you're parking in a car accident because, just close to, potter and off stage, there's, Old Stage." said Antonio Acosta, Compliance Manager at Alba. "If you're going 45mph, your car will start, shaking from all the other bumps out there."

Despite Old Stage Road being heavily traveled by the farm working community, Acosta feels like the county has been neglecting much-needed repairs.

"You haven't seen a major repair work like 16 years," said Acosta. "And the question I have is, you know, I see 68 one, and other roads like River Road that they care major repairs, why is it the reason that Old Stage gets neglected?"

A County of Monterey spokesperson says that Old Stage Road is one of the priority projects in the Measure X campaign.

It says the county has phased out rehabilitation measures every year for the entire length of Old Stage Road, starting from the culverts to underneath the roads to the pavement itself.

"It's concerning this because all this area, it's all ag and you have all these families that are coming out, from Salinas, other South County towns to come work in the ag industry," said Acosta.

In the near term, the county says they received a "Hot truck" that will be used to make longer-lasting repairs than the current methods used to repair potholes.

Acosta says repairs could not come soon enough.

"Not just for, to have a nice road, but for the safety of people coming to work so they can return back home safe to their families. And let's not wait until we have a fatal accident," said Acosta.

A County official says a truck will be deployed to respond to requests to fix potholes. The county's phased approach is to continue fixing the roads heading in the northbound direction for now.
