CHP: Two people killed in crash along Highway 68 near Salinas
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The CHP has shared more details about what led up to a deadly crash Friday afternoon.
Officers said at 4:44 p.m., a gray Mazda CX9 was heading east on Highway 68 near Spreckels Boulevard when the driver veered to the left and onto the grass median where it struck a sign. The Mazda continued traveling the wrong way into the westbound lanes where it hit a white Honda CRV head-on.
The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. He's been identified by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as 64-year old Pascasio Contreras- Dominguez of Salinas.
The Honda's driver was taken to the hospital where she also died. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has identified her as 52-year old Bridget Peterson, also of Salinas.
The CHP said it's unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved in this crash.

Caltrans traffic cameras show traffic slowing down in the area.
The CHP confirmed two people are dead and a white Honda and gray Mazda were involved in the crash.
The CHP also said one person from each car was dead as a result of the crash.
Westbound 68 is backed up at this time, but the CHP says the left-hand lane is open for people to pass through.
The Spreckels Boulevard on ramp to Westbound is closed at this time.
