Suspect killed during shootout with Placer County deputies
COLFAX, Calif. (KION-TV/KOVR) -- A Placer County deputy was shot and hospitalized after a shootout with a suspect overnight in Colfax.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office says around 11 p.m. on Thursday, deputies patrolling in Colfax found a van in a McDonald's parking lot on Auburn Street matching the description of a vehicle used in a burglary the day before.
Investigators say deputies contacted the man but he was uncooperative.
At one point, the sheriff's office says deputies used pepper spray until the suspect started shooting at the deputies.
One deputy was shot and the sheriff's office says they're in "critical but stable condition."
Investigators say after the shooting stopped and the department's Special Enforcement Team approached the vehicle and found the suspect was dead.
It's unknown if the suspect's death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot or if they were killed in the shootout with deputies.
No other injuries were reported and the identity of the suspect was not immediately provided.
