Seaside Police arrested kidnapping suspect in Carmel Valley, shelter-in-place lifted

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON MAY 1, 2024 AT 1:27 PM- Seaside Police confirmed they have arrested a kidnapping suspect in the Carmel Valley area.

Investigators said the suspect identified as Anthony Mauro went to an man's home and demanded the man give him his vehicle in Seaside.

Seaside Police said Mauro displayed a hammer and forced the male into a vehicle and drove him to a second location in Seaside where Mauro stole a second vehicle.

Investigators said Mauro stole his keys and forced the man to drive the car before he got kicked out by Mauro.

Officers said the victim was released unharmed.

Investigators said Mauro drove the stolen vehicle through Seaside and Cal State University Monterey BAY jurisdictions and CSUMB police attempted to stop him for erratic driving.

Mauro led police on a high-speed pursuit through California Highway Patrol and County of Monterey.

Mauro abandoned the vehicle in Carmel Valley near the Village and a multi-hour manhunt ensued.

Police said that Mauro was located at a Carmel Valley home. The homeowner Meghan Macaluso said that she noticed Mauro walking on her front lawn.

"I just saw this man, and he was very out of place, and I didn't know who he was," Macaluso said. "And it was weird that my dogs were going crazy, and he didn't even look at them."

Macaluso told KION that she was the one who made the call to police.

"I came out here and there were multiple officers, and there's a path that runs up the back way of my property," Macaluso said. "And I showed them where to run, and they ran, and that's when they apprehended him."

Seaside Police said that Mauro is facing multiple charges including carjacking, robbery and kidnapping.

Investigators said that Mauro did not resist arrest but he allegedly appeared to be under the influence when he was arrested.

Mauro was in possession of a hammer and multiple replica firearms. He was also in possession of numerous methamphetamine pipes.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office have lifted the shelter-in-place.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has issued a shelter-in-place order for areas of West Carmel Valley Road as deputies are looking for a suspicious person in a white Honda Odyssey on Wednesday morning.

Seaside Police Chief Nick Borges told KION that they are looking for a suspect involved in a carjacking and kidnapping incident and multiple agencies are involved in the situation.

Borges said that the suspect fled to the Carmel Valley Village near and helicopters are attempting to locate him at this time.

Borges said the kidnapping victim has been found and is safe.

Seaside Police is describing the suspect as a white man in his 40's.

A spokesperson with the California University Monterey Bay confirmed to KION said that their University Police Department but the situation is unrelated to campus.

According to deputies, the shelter-in-place is for areas of West Carmel Valley Road which include Boronda Road and Rancho Road along with Panetta Road and Country Club Drive.

Also included in the shelter-in-place are tributary roads and areas of West Carmel Valley Road between these roads.

The Sheriff's Office is looking for a suspicious person in a White Honda Odyssey van with the license plate of 8BNP560.
