Delivery driver crashes into pole to escape alleged armed robbery suspect in Watsonville, police arrested suspect

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV)- Watsonville Police is calling a delivery driver's actions "bold" after he crashed his truck into a vehicle in order to escape a robbery scene early Saturday morning.

A spokesperson with the Watsonville Police Department confirmed the incident started when a 41-year-old delivery driver was approached by a man at a gas station on the 1800 block of Main Street.

Investigators said the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Joshua Barcelo, demanded to get into the delivery driver's vehicle, per police.

Watsonville Police said that a mile into the drive, the driver intentionally crashed into a light pole near Ford and Main Street.

Officers said that the driver feared for his life because Barcelo allegedly pulled out what appeared to be a knife.

Watsonville Police was able to arrest Barcelo shortly after the driver called 911. Investigators said that there were no injuries in the crash.

Barcelo was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on attempted robbery charges.
