City of Monterey to remove parking spaces near crosswalks and intersections

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- On Tuesday, the City of Monterey announced they have implemented Assembly Bill 413 which will remove parking spaces near crosswalks and intersections.

The bill is known as the "Daylighting Bill," which will go into effect by Jan. 1, 2025.

“Every intersection is affected by the new State law; however, many intersections currently have signage or markings which are consistent with the newly adopted law," City of Monterey Engineering Assistant Marissa Garcia said.

Garcia also added that the public works department  is reviewing all projects in design and construction phases to ensure that they are consistent with the new state law and will address existing marked parking spaces to ensure they are in compliance.

As of now, citations can be given to vehicles that are parked where it is marked or signed.

Garcia said that cars parked too close to intersections can block the field of vision for drivers and obscure the corners where pedestrians are crossing the street.

Starting in 2025, city officials said that citations will be issued to any vehicle in violation without the need for red curbs or additional signs.

City of Monterey Parking Superintendent Cristie Steffy said in a press release that they want to let the community know ahead of time for these changes.

"We have a year to create awareness and understanding of the new parking rules before motorists will begin getting cited for non-compliance," Steffy said.
