Deputies identify Scotts Valley man who died in a structure fire

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON APRIL 9, 2024 AT 2:26 P.M.- The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office have identified a Scotts Valley man who died in a structure fire on April 2.

Deputies identified the man as 66-year-old Jonathan Lange of Scotts Valley.

The Sheriff's Office said the fire happened on the 200 block of Nelson Road around 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Firefighters discovered that a deceased person inside the structure.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

One person dead in structure fire in Scotts Valley, deputies say

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said that at one person has died in a structure fire that took place on Tuesday night.

Deputies said the fire happened on the 200 block of Nelson Road around 8:35 p.m.

Scotts Valley Fire said that the location of the fire was at the end of a private road and off the hydrant water system.

Once on scene, firefighters found a fully involved small structure with only one wall still standing. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and were notified that the only person may not have escaped.

Around 10:45 p.m., Scotts Valley Fire located the the person inside of the structure.

Fire crews and deputies remained on scene until early Wednesday morning as the Sheriff's Office was able to recover the body.

Deputies said they do not believe anybody else was inside the home at the time of the fire.

No other structures were threatened as a result of the fire.

A spokesperson with the Sheriff's Office told KION that the cause is still being investigated and deputies are still working to identify the individual and notify next of kin.
