Captain Cooper Elementary School and Apple Pie preschools to close on Thursday and Friday due to cancelled convoys on Highway 1
CARMEL, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON APRIL 3, 2024 AT 1:19 PM- The Carmel Unified School District have announced that they will be closing Captain Cooper and Apple Pie preschools due to the cancelled convoys on Highway 1.
Carmel Unified School District Superintendent Sharon Ofek sent a letter to parents that students at both preschools will need to be picked up by 3:30 p.m. in order for families to make the last convoy at 4 p.m.
Ofek said that the afterschool program at Captain Cooper will be canceled as well.
District officials said that Carmel Middle School and Carmel High School will still be open for instruction on Thursday and Friday.
Ofek confirmed that teachers have been working to post materials to Google Classroom but there will be no substitute for in-person instruction.
The district said that they will announce plans to potentially reopen both preschools depending on if convoys will resume on this weekend.
Carmel High School and Middle School to remain open for students impacted by Highway 1 Closure
The Carmel Unified School District said that Carmel Middle School and Carmel High School will be open for students who are impacted by the Highway 1 Closure at Palo Colorado Road.
District officials said that they will have a bus stationed at Palo Colorado Road for students whose families are able to transport their children through the convoy.
Parents will be allowed to travel through the convoy drop off their children, and turn around to catch the southbound convoy back to Big Sur.
A school bus will bring kids back to the Palo Colorado Road area for parents to pick up and get through the 4 p.m. convoy on Highway 1.
The Apple Pie preschool program will be open tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Red Van will not be available so parents will have to bring their child to school.
Captain Cooper Elementary School in Big Sur will be open tomorrow.
The hours of operation will stay the same for a typical school day which is 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. for Kindergarten and 8:30 am - 3:00 pm for 1st thru 5th grades with the afterschool program until 4:15 p.m.
District officials told KION that they will share an update on the status on tomorrow night.
