One person is dead after being hit by car on Highway 101

SALINAS, CALIF. (KION-TV)- One person is dead after being hit by a driver that tried avoiding them on Highway 101.

According to CHP at around 10:50 p.m., an unknown person walked onto the number one lane on southbound 101, just south of Boronda Road. During that time, 73-year-old Charles Donovan from Oakland was driving in the same lane in his black Volvo. In the number two lane just behind Donovan was an unknown driver in a light colored vehicle.

Because of the unknown person on the road, Donovan tried swerving to his right to avoid them, but was unable to and still hit them. At the same time, the driver in the number two lane hit the right rear side of Donovan's Volvo with their front driver side.

Following the collision, Donovan stayed on scene to help with the investigation. The driver in the light colored vehicle drove off from the scene.

The person hit by Donovan succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene. Donovan didn't sustain any injuries.

It's unknown if drugs and/or alcohol are a factor in the crash, but officials say Donovan wasn't determined to have had any drugs and/or alcohol in his system.
