Pacific Grove man rescued 36 hours after surviving 400 foot plunge along Big Sur Coast

BIG SUR, Calif. (KION-TV)- A Pacific Grove man is expected to be okay after he was rescued two days after his car went off a cliff along the Big Sur coast.

Big Sur Fire tells KION a Pacific Grove family reported a man was missing around 9:30 a.m. and were attempting to search for him along the Big Sur Coast using a drone.

Family members told firefighters that they hadn't heard from him in two days and knew he frequently drove to the Big Sur area for work.

Firefighters said the man who is an employee for the Post Ranch Inn said that he left work around 11:30 p.m. and never came home.

The California Highway Patrol found a car matching the description of the man's vehicle south of Hurricane Point and 400 feet down the cliffside.

Big Sur Fire said the CHP officers saw someone was moving around inside the car.

The vehicle was severely damaged and came to rest 50 feet from the beach in some brush at the bottom of the cliff.

The California Highway Patrol Coastal Division said that they were able to hoist the man to safety near the area of Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur and Monastery Beach in Big Sur.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the man swerved his car to miss a dear and veered off the highway and was ejected from his sunroof.

The driver was severely injured and airlifted to Natividad Medical Center for treatment. The California Highway Patrol said the man only suffered moderate injuries.
