East Cliff Drive and Moran Way closed due to tree down in the road

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV)- The California Highway Patrol said that East Cliff Drive and Moran Way closed due to a falling tree and wires across the roadway on Thursday afternoon.

The outage in the area affected 374 customers. Officials say no one was injured in the incident.

According to Santa Cruz County Parks, a eucalyptus tree in the area was marked for removal. While being removed, the tree fell onto a nearby power line.

Shauna Moulton has lived across the street from the trees from 37 years. She says the unpredictable weather and vulnerable trees has her worried.

"We need to have the rest of the trees removed, because it we won't feel safe until they're fallen. And it's just a matter of when not if those trees are gonna fall," Moulton said.

Santa Cruz County Parks said they're continuing to address the issue.

“We've employed arborist, entomologist, biologist, professionals on a regular basis, we've gone through and and surveyed the trees," Santa Cruz County Parks Director Jeff Gaffney said.

Gaffney adds the monarch butterfly habitat in the area around Moran Lake make the situation more complex.

CHP did not have a timeline on when the road could reopen.
