Marina PD says that three overdoses and one death from controlled substances has taken place over a two-day span

MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV)- Marina Police said that they have seen three overdoses taken place and one person has died from controlled substances over two-day span.

Police they responded to multiple calls on Tuesday involving controlled substances that led to overdoses. Officers received multiple calls along Carmel Avenue and Reservation Road.

Investigators said that the drugs taken by people who were experiencing overdoses tested positive for fentanyl.

Marina Police said that they responded to an incident on the 200 block of Carmel Avenue in Marina on Wednesday.

Officers and paramedics arrived on scene and the person had to be restrained and became unresponsive.

The person was later declared dead while being taken to a hospital.

Reb Close who is an addiction medicine specialist for Montage Health says that patients can get fentanyl confused with other drugs.

"Many patients will be using what they think is cocaine or meth or even cannabis, and they will suffer an overdose from fentanyl because they weren't expecting it in the drug supply," Close said. "So that's why we're seeing it here and why we're having so many overdoses and people dying."

Montage Health says they are working to shift old newspaper boxes into Narcan boxes for people to grab in case of an emergency.

Montage Health says that those efforts to create Narcan Boxes may start next week.
