Multiple parks closed in Monterey County due to expected severe weather

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV)- With severe weather rolling into the Central Coast on Wednesday night, the County of Monterey and other local agencies are shutting down a couple of parks in the area to keep the public safe.

Here is a list of park closures in Monterey County, this list could include potential road closures in Monterey County and potential power outages that could occur. This article will continue to be updated

Park Closures

  • The National Parks Service announced they will be closing two caves located within Pinnacles National Park. The Bear Gulch and Balconies caves will be closed due to the park being under a high flood and wind advisory. Park officials said if you plan on visiting the park, you can visit their website for any potential cave closures which is right here.
  • The California State Parks announced that Point Lobos State Reserve will be closed on Wednesday due to high winds and the potential of trees falling in the area. State park officials said that park could reopen on Thursday depending on conditions within the park.
  • Monterey County officials said that Jacks Peak Park in Monterey will be closed indefinably due flooding and high wind advisory. According to county officials and the National Weather Service, Jacks Peak will receive over four inches of rain and wind gusts up to forty-seven miles per hour.
  • The City of Salinas will be closing Sherwood Park, Central Park and Soto Square Park.

Monterey County officials also announced they have activated their inclement weather for the time period of Thursday thru Monday.

County officials said that homeless people who live the activated regions of Monterey County which include activation is for southern and northern Monterey County and areas surrounding Salinas.

The county also said that motel vouchers for homeless residents may be issued during this period as a last-resort emergency shelter tool when all other shelter options have been exhausted.
