Structure fire in Monterey leaves people displaced

MONTEREY, CALIF. (KION-TV)- Monterey officials are investigating a structure fire that left a number of people displaced Friday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, Monterey Fire responded to a call of a residential fire on the 700 block of Lobos Street in Monterey. When crews arrived, heavy fire was coming out from the attic and living room.

With the help of Monterey Police, the Monterey Building Official, CAL FIRE and the Presidio of Monterey Fire Department, crews were able to contain the fire to the area where it originally started and kept it from spreading. Officials remained on scene overnight.

According to officials, the building sustained significant fire and structural damage. An initial estimated loss is set at approximately $200,000.

An unknown number of people were able to evacuate from the building. No injuries have been reported and the people that were displaced are receiving help from Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
