Suspect involved in deputy-involved non injury shooting has been arrested, Sheriff’s Office said
ROYAL OAKS, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON JAN. 17, 2024 AT 5:57 PM- A 33-year-old man who was allegedly shot by two Monterey County Sheriff's Office deputies has been arrested.
Coleman Smith was booked into the Monterey County Jail when he was released from the hospital.
Monterey County Undersheriff Keith Boyd said that Smith is facing multiple charges including burglary, attempting to grab a deputies gun and causing harm to an elderly person.
Smith allegedly barricaded himself in a home along the 200 block of Strawberry Road on Jan. 12.
Investigators said Smith walked out of the home with a sword and tried to attack deputies when they fired bean bag rounds that were not effective.
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office said that Sgt. Jon Luther and Deputy Michael Davis fired their guns and hit Smith. Smith was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Smith will be in a Salinas courtroom on Jan. 23 at 1:30 p.m.
Two deputies involved in shooting on Strawberry Canyon Road have been placed on administrative leave, DA's office investigating case
UPDATE ON JAN. 16, 2024 AT 4:54PM- The Monterey County District Attorney's Office and the Monterey County Sheriff's Office confirmed that two deputies that were involved in a shooting in Royal Oaks have been put on administrative leave.
The DA's Office revealed the identities of the deputies involved as Sgt. Jon Luther and Deputy Michael Davis of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
Luther has been with the Sheriff's Office for 26 years while Davis has been with the Sheriff's Office for 21 years.
The shooting took place on Friday when deputies responded to the 200 block of Strawberry Road for a criminal investigation.
The Sheriff's Office said that deputies made contact with a man who barricaded himself inside the home.
Investigators said the man eventually walked out of the home and armed with a weapon. The suspect did have a sword with him.
The suspect involved proceeded to attack deputies which they deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds that were not effective according to investigators.
The two deputies fired their guns and hit the suspect where he was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The District Attorney's Office said that the case is still under review at this time.
Suspect shot by deputies in Royal Oaks

(KION-TV)- Update Jan. 12, 2024, at 4:23 p.m.- Deputies were at a home on the 200 block of Strawberry Canyon Road in Royal Oaks for a criminal investigation, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies made contact with a man who barricaded himself inside the home, according to deputies. Deputies and Mental Health Crisis Units negotiated with man to leave the home peacefully, according to investigators.
At around 9:45 A.M., the man ultimately walked out of the home, armed with a weapon, according to deputies. Sources tell KION the suspect had a sword. The suspect attacked deputies; they deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds that were not effective, according to the Sheriff’s office. Investigators say that is when two deputies fired their guns hitting the suspect. The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ROYAL OAKS, CALIF. (KION-TV) – One suspect has been taken to the hospital after shots were fired on Strawberry Road in Royal Oaks, according to county officials. Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni tells KION that there was an officer involved shooting incident involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office which resulted in non-fatal injuries.
