50-year-old San Jose man arrested on DUI charges after driving truck into the Pacific Ocean
PLEASURE POINT, Calif. (KION-TV)- The California Highway Patrol said that 50-year-old Chad Rodger Gulmon of San Jose has been arrested on DUI charges after a truck was driven off East Cliff Drive at 33rd Avenue and into the Pacific Ocean on early Sunday morning.
CHP Santa Cruz said that the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. Officers said that Gulmon was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on East Cliff Drive approaching Pleasure Point Drive.
According to CHP, Gulmon failed to maintain control of the Chevrolet which exited the roadway, crashed into a fence, and traveled off a cliff, where it came to rest partially submerged in the ocean.
A witness to the crash stopped at the scene and extricated Gulmon from the truck.
Gulmon suffered major but non life-threatening injuries and was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He was later arrested for DUI and was the only occupant inside the truck. Gulmon was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
CHP said that alcohol and drugs are being investigated as factors in this crash.
According to Santa Cruz County District 1 Supervisor Manu Koeing, CHP was able to lift the truck out of the ocean around 10 a.m.
Koeing also said that there was evidence of oil/gas in the water and a Hazmat team was deployed to the scene which Santa Cruz County confirmed in a tweet.
CHP Santa Cruz did say that the U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the crash.
