Person of interest in San Francisco mass shooting that injured 9 detained in Santa Cruz County: SF Police
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Update June 15, 2023, at 11:52 a.m.- San Francisco Police confirmed on Wednesday night that they arrested a person of interest in a Mission District mass shooting that injured 9 people Friday in Santa Cruz County.
Police in San Francisco confirmed that Javier Campos, who had previously been identified as a person of interest in the case, was in custody for the shooting. Police also said Campos had multiple outstanding warrants from several law enforcement agencies, including one out of Oakland for homicide.
SF Police said Campos was detained in Santa Cruz County on Wednesday afternoon. SFPD described this as a "multi-jurisdictional effort" and CHP Santa Cruz said the chase ended on Highway 1 at Morrissey Boulevard.
Gunfire erupted shortly after 9 p.m. Friday during an anniversary party hosted by the clothing store Dying Breed near the intersection of 24th Street and Treat Avenue in the Mission District. Among the victims were eight men and one woman ranging in age from 19 to 35, police said.
Witnesses said a gunman inside a car opened fire in a drive-by style shooting as a crowd of about 20 people stood outside, per our sister station KTVU.
According to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, one person injured in the shooting remained in critical condition as of Tuesday.
Suspect arrested after high-speed chase through Santa Cruz County
The California Highway Patrol says a suspect is in custody following a high-speed chase through Santa Cruz County Wednesday night.
CHP said a heavy law enforcement presence was able to detain a suspect driving a white car on northbound Highway 1. CHP said they detained the suspect at Morrissey Boulevard.
According to the CHP, the suspect was tossing weapons from the vehicle during the pursuit.
The reason for the chase is currently unknown.
