Seaside Police search for suspect in attempted ATM robbery using explosives devices
SEASIDE, Calif. (KION) UPDATE Sept. 24 -- The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ATF is currently leading an investigation on one or multiple suspects involved in an attempted ATM burglary in Seaside.
Seaside Police responded to an ATM machine alarm that went off at the Bank of America on Fremont Boulevard Wednesday morning. According to a police statement, dispatchers warned that several people reported hearing an explosion near the bank. When officers arrived, the outside of ATM was "substantially damaged" and there was debris around it. According to police, the bank alarm triggered the FBI and ATF to investigate in Seaside.
"[ATF doesn't] think this is somebody who has a lot of experience building sophisticated, dangerous bombs that could cause great damage. And that's a good thing," Seaside Acting Police Chief Nick Borges told KION. "It's still very scary that we have somebody that's using some form of low-level knowledge to develop an explosive device to do something like this."
There were no injuries reported.
Borges said they have not been able to track down the people or person who attempted to rob the bank and they're also unsure if there was more than one person involved, but his message to them is, "We're going to track you down. We have quite a few people out there working on this investigation with the FBI, the ATF, and our department working together. And it would be very good on their behalf to step forward and take responsibility, because either which way we are going to capture who did this.
