Monterey County Sheriffs identify dead hiker found in Big Sur
Big Sur, Calif. (KION) UPDATE Sept. 24, 2021 Monterey County Sheriff's office identified the hiker that fell off the cliff in Julia Pfeifer State Park on Tuesday.
Authorities said Marie Denea Ishie was hiking in a "prohibited rocky area" southwest of Mcway Falls when she lost her footing. Ishie landed in the ocean and the waves drifted her onto the beach, but she wasn't breathing when a ranger arrived and ultimately died from the injuries. The 22-year-old was also active in the U.S. Navy.
UPDATE Sept. 23, 2021 Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the hiker who plummeted to her death in Big Sur is from Southern California. The Coroner is still trying to get in contact with the family before giving ID.
ORIGINAL STORY: On Wednesday night the Monterey County's coroner confirmed deputies they were on their way to Big Sur where a dead hiker had been found.
Foul play is not suspected, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office tells KION The hiker appeared to fall off a cliff, plummeting to their death.
A state park ranger tells KION that the victim is a young woman in her mid 20s. She was off the trail in a closed area at Julia Pfeiffer State Park and fell off a cliff down on the beach. A ranger performed CPR until other units arrived yet she died as a result of her injuries.
More information is expected to be released Thursday morning.
