King City to offer financial assistance for housing
KING CITY, Calif. (KION) King City announced the addition of a temporary program that will provide financial assistance for residents whose incomes have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Our community, even in normal times, has a significant number of people who are in need. It's particularly tough when you add the impacts of COVID-19 onto that," said King City City Manager, Steve Adams.
Starting October 15, residents can receive up to $1,500/month for three months to use on rent, mortgages and utility costs.
Those who have not been affected by the pandemic may also receive financial assistance for one month of rent.
King City has over $275,000 to dedicate to the program thanks to United Way Monterey County, County of Monterey, King City Community Power, California Water Service Company, and Waste Management, Inc.
Adams predicts the city will be able to help as many as 60 households with the funds.
Mom, Deena Gonzales, said her husband lost his job earlier in the year. "It's just been really tough," said Gonzales.
Gonzales doesn't live in King City, but said she would be interested in the program if she did. "I think it would be good. In my situation, if I wasn't so fortunate, I would love that concept for myself," said Gonzales.
To qualify, an applicant must have an income below 80% of the median in Monterey County. Adams said applicants who qualify will be chosen on a first-come first-serve basis.
"If we do get applications in excess we will probably look at cutting down the amount per household so we can help as many as possible," said Adams.
Those interested in the program can call 2-1-1 or the city office at 831-385-3281.
