Repetitive beach closures affect local businesses
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) Since 1989, The Grill at Lovers Point has served burgers and fries beachside.
"The peak months are summer. May through September," said manager, Danielle Cavallaro.
Summer is the grill's time to bring in business. "This is how we survive the rest of the year," said Cavallaro.
With their main attraction closed for the third holiday weekend in a row, the grill is bracing for the good and the bad. "We have to prepare ourselves for whether or not there will be people down here or if we are going to be dead for the weekend," said Cavallaro.
The following beaches in both Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties are closed through Monday: Main Beach, Cowell Beach, Seacliff State Beach, Capitola Beach, Manresa Main State Beach, Sunset State Beach, Marina State Beach, Fort Ord Dunes State Park, Monterey State Beach, Del Monte Beach, San Carlos Beach, McAbee Beach, Lovers Point Beach and Park, Asilomar State Beach, Carmel Beach, Carmel River State Beach, Monastery Beach.
State and local officials said the closures are put in place to discourage large gatherings and stop the spread of COVID-19.
Some beaches will remain open for recreational water activities like surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling.
"Everyone looks forward to have the water to cool them off. It not being available is just horrible," said Cecilia Torrez who visited Lovers Point, Friday.
Torrez hopped on a bike instead. Like many, she said she wanted to get out of the house and enjoy the breeze. "This is our first time. It's been a few years since I've been able to ride a bike like this," said Torrez.
It's these available outdoor activities that the grill hopes will continue to bring people to Lovers Point.
"If you follow the social distancing rules put in place, wear your mask and be kind and friendly to each other I think we can continue to have a good weekend," said Cavallaro.
