Arrests made in connection to murder of Santa Cruz resident

Two people have been arrested for their believed connection to the murder of a Santa Cruz man.

On April 6th, San Jose police officers responded to a welfare check of a person inside a vehicle in the 300 block of La Strada Drive in San Jose.

Arriving officers found 22-year-old Santa Cruz resident Zane Groves suffering from at least one stab wound. Groves was pronounced dead at the scene.

Follow-up investigation by homicide detectives led to the identification of suspects 34--year-old Jason Koplin and 23-year-old Violet Smyth, both from Richmond.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2020, members of the FBI Fugitive Task Force arrested Jason Koplin on a murder warrant and Violet Smyth on an accessory after the fact warrant.

They were both arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada and booked into the Clark County Detention Center where they await extradition to San Jose.
