SEASIDE, Calif. (KION) Michelle Brooks is used to cooking a full spread on Easter, but this Sunday she fed more than just her family.

"It was in me. I just woke up and thought, you know what, we have to give back to the community," said Brooks.

In a time where businesses are struggling and money is tight, Brooks is making a difference. The doors of Michelle's Soul Food Kitchen may have to stay closed, but she decided that doesn't mean she can't still open her heart.

"This is the time for family. I feel like it is the time for family. We're reaching out to all the people that don't have that," said Brooks.

Brooks woke up at 7 a.m. to prepare nearly 200 meals to feed the elderly, homeless or anyone who needed a hot meal.

"It means a lot to see people giving out and making sure everyone else is fed. It makes me feel blessed," said Darrell Sostand, who came to pick up food.

"I'm feeling blessed because I was hungry today," said another guest, Tony Alexander.

Food service agencies across Monterey County report that demand has skyrocketed since mid-March.

Brooks wanted to pitch-in in her own way. On Sunday all meals were free, but sure to not go unnoticed.

"Giving a hand really helps a lot," said Brooks.
