SALINAS, Calif. (KION) Kennels once filled with dozens of cats and dogs are now nearly empty. Monterey County residents showed they were willing to step up and help by offering a temporary home while the state stays indoors.

"Within three days we were able to get approximately 50 dogs out. We're still trying to continue that process," said Monterey County Animal Services supervisor, Petra Lewis.

Monterey County Animal Services and the Salinas Animal Shelter are adjusting to changing times. They are making due with less staff working at the facilities. Volunteer programs have been suspended until the state wide stay-at-home order is lifted.

Staff said they are able to manage the small number of animals they have yet to find foster homes for, but fear that could quickly change. "This time of year we are seeing a lot of cats come in. There are still dogs running at large and could be pregnant," said Lewis.

The shelter spays or neuters all animals prior to adoption, but under Monterey County's shelter in place order such services are not considered "essential" and have been put on hold. Staff are already planning for a boom in puppies and kittens down the line.

"When this order lifts we need to determine how our spay and neuter clinic and other agencies can come together to meet that need," said Lewis.

Lewis said euthanasia has not been an option. With the help of the community, staff said they have had enough resources to care for the animals.

"These animals are walking out the front door. Euthanasia is not on the table due to the pandemic," said Lewis.
