2020 Salinas Valley Fair canceled

SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

On Thursday evening, the Salinas Valley Fair Board of Directors unanimously voted to cancel the 2020 Salinas Valley Fair. The announcement was made on their Facebook page.

The announcement on their Facebook page read: “It is with heavy hearts and the community safety in mind that we announce The Salinas Valley Fair Board of Directors voted unanimously to cancel the 2020 Salinas Valley Fair scheduled for May 14-17, 2020."

The decision to cancel the fair was based on the public's safety and the stay-at-home orders currently in effect in the State of California.

"We share the disappointment and sadness this news brings with all of you - we know how hard all stakeholders work to be a special part of our community’s Fair," read the post.

On April 13, more information will be provided for people who had already purchased advanced tickets, registered for competitions, vendor deposits, etc.

Organizers are exploring an online sale of 4-H and FFA animal projects to facilitate the safe transfer of locally-produced livestock into the food supply chain. While livestock officials await guidelines from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) for online livestock sales at fairgrounds, they will develop plans for how to best serve the over 1,000 4-H and FFA members that have entered the 2020 Salinas Valley Fair. More information is expected soon.

The fairgrounds will now serve as a distribution site for the Monterey County Food Bank. People can email the fair’s board at svf@salinasvalleyfair.com with any questions they might have about the fair’s cancellation.
