Central Coast students react to risky TikTok challenge
A recent trend on the social media app TikTok is going viral, but it could also be dangerous. The “skull breaker challenge” has reportedly resulted in concussions. Doctors warn it could easily lead to skull fractures, neck fractures, and even paralysis.
The “skull breaker challenge” starts with three people standing in a row. When the middle person jumps, the other two trip that person. That leaves them landing on their back, and often slamming their head against the ground.
The trend leaves many adults wondering why anyone would be so willing to put themselves in danger. But high schoolers on the Central Coast say they understand the motivation.
“For the views and the likes,” Salinas High School student Nathaniel Gamboa said. “And to become famous, I guess. Because, in high school, like, in my opinion, everybody wants to be known for something. So I guess that’s what they want to be known for.”
“A lot of people are iffy about it, but I don’t know,” Salinas High School student Alyssa Maniscalco said. “In my opinion, it’s kind of funny. But teenagers are a little sadistic.”
But as this trend has grown, so has the pushback. If you search “skull breaker challenge” on the app, you’ll actually find a lot of videos encouraging people not to do it.
Local police are also warning about another challenge that was trending not too long ago. Teens were trying to stick pennies in between their phone chargers and wall sockets until they saw sparks. Of course, that can easily cause a fire.
