City of Santa Cruz considers postponing gas-powered leaf blower ordinance

SANTA CRUZ, Caflif. (KION-TV) -- The City of Santa Cruz may not be moving forward with an ordinance to ban gas-powered leaf blowers by January 1, 2025.

The city is considering a motion to postpone the ordinance from January to July 2025, hoping that staff will evaluate the number of residents currently using gas-powered leaf blowers who may be need financial assistance.

According to a city report, this 6-month extension may allow more people time to access rebates to switch from gas to electric-powered leaf blowers.

When the ban is approved, it will permit only landscaping businesses to qualify for rebates due to state requirements.
