Santa Cruz evacuation shelter opens up at Harbor High
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION)
A shelter for evacuees who are fleeing wildfires has opened at a Santa Cruz high school.
The Santa Cruz County Emergency Operations Center announced Saturday that a shelter has opened at Harbor High School at 300 La Fonda Ave. in Santa Cruz.
The shelter has room for 75 evacuees and is ADA-compliant.
More than 45,000 residents have been displaced by the Lightning Complex Fires and shelters have limited capacity due to COVID-19.
Evacuees are being asked to contact friends or family for a place to say before seeking out a shelter.
Additionally, Santa Cruz County officials are urging anyone who is currently staying outdoors to seek indoor shelter as erratic winds and lightning is expected in the coming days.
There is currently available spots at the following evacuation shelters:
- Harbor High School, 300 La Fonda Ave., Santa Cruz.
- Cabrillo College gymnasium, 6500 Soquel Ave., Aptos.
- Santa Cruz Bible Church, 440 Frederick St., Santa Cruz.
- Congregational Church of Soquel, 4951 Soquel Dr., Soquel.
- Simpkins Swim Center, 979 17th Ave., Santa Cruz.
These shelters can provide evacuees access to food, restrooms, hygiene facilities, security and medical and behavioral health services.
