Fatal collision kills one, leaves another in critical condition

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A man is dead after a car collided with a tree Saturday morning.

Officers with the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to the scene at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Center Street just after 1:00 a.m.

First responders attempted to administer life-saving measures to the vehicle's passenger, but were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remains in critical condition and is being treated for their injuries at an undisclosed trauma center.

It was yet to be determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
