Salinas Police to enforce safety ahead of New Year’s Eve
SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- As New Year's Eve festivities get underway, the Salinas Police Department say that they will be stepping up enforcement to keep everyone safe during the holiday.
According to Salinas Police, they say that their focus will be on illegal activities, much of what they say they've seen in the past.
“Don't go out there and potentially ruin your life or ruin someone else's life," said Salinas Police Department Sergeant Zachary Dunagan. "And that goes for all these things, whether it's fireworks, shootings or DUI driving, there's potential for danger to both the individual that's partaking and the people around them.”
Police say that their focus in on illegal activities like using illegal fireworks, DUI incidents and celebratory shooting into the air.
"As we count down to 2025, here’s a reminder: shooting a gun into the air is NOT the way to ring in the new year," wrote the Salinas Police Department in a Facebook post. "Remember, what goes up, must come down, likely when you least expect it. And bullets don’t have a 'soft landing'."
Salinas Police say that they will be using a variety of different tools to crack down on illegal partying, like drones for firework usage as well as the Shotspotter detection system. They also said that they will have extra patrols throughout the city to help deter this type of behvior.
"This New Year’s Eve, let’s keep the bangs to the popping of champagne bottles, not gunshots. Let’s make sure the only thing falling from the sky is confetti," wrote the Salinas police.
