California supports Salinas youth and family homelessness through funding

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KION-TV) - Governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that the City of Salinas has been given $2,838,211 to prevent youth homelessness through the Family Homelessness Challenge (FHC) Grant program. Additionally, the County of Santa Clara has been awarded $3,330,724.

The Governor's office said that they will also be providing funding to 50 other counties across the state through more grant programs.

“These grants are critical for helping to connect some of the most vulnerable Californians with access to housing," said Governor Gavin Newsom. "Many of these young adults don’t have the support of friends or family that most of us take for granted.”

The state is hoping that the $56 million announced today will serve 8,075 Californians in need.

“Housing stability is the most basic foundation every young person needs to be able to build a better future,” said the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Director Gustavo Velasquez.

The HCD's FHC grant program is aimed at rapid innovation, nascent programs and providing scalable solutions to end family homelessness.
