The 50501 Movement rallies around the Central Coast Monday
CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A national protest called The 50501 Movement broke out across the nation Monday, seeing a large turnout along the Central Coast.
"I support the constitution," said Suzanne Roth, a resident who marched in Monday's 50501 Movement in Salinas. "I don't think we are actually going by what the constitution says."
The movement, also known as "Not My President's Day" online and in social media, brought people together at Salinas City Hall as well as the Courthouse in Santa Cruz around noon Monday.
One viewer reached out to KION and said that they guessed there were about 1,000 protestors marching in Santa Cruz.
"People started to accumulate around a quarter to 12," said a protestor Allan Cox. "The rally started at 12... I'm not sure how long the rally goes until."
"Our state and local governments are key now," Central Coast resident and rally participant Jacqui Stuarts said. "We have to have strong backbones and stand up because this is the last line of defense."
The 50501 Movement is an initiative of mass protests popping up in all 50 states to rally against the Trump administration's policies, according to the organization. The goal of The 50501 Movement is to try and get all states to hold 50 protests on one single day.
"The #50501 protests were a decentralized rapid response to the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies," wrote fiftyfifty.one on their website.
Blair Stuarts, another marcher in Monday's rally, added, "We're trying to raise people's awareness to the issues because there are people who just aren't connected to the news and don't realize what's happening now."
