Man with Samurai sword threatened officers; Monterey Police
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey Police announced Thursday that they responded to a residency in the 400 block of David Avenue for reports of an intoxicated person, identified as 24-year-old Giuseppi Abbruzzetti, causing a disturbance.
On Tuesday night around 9:45 p.m. police arrived on scene to speak with the reporting party, when Abbruzzetti emerged from a bedroom holding a ten-inch kitchen knife and challenging officers.
They say that deescalation attempts from officers didn't work, and so they left the home with Abbruzzetti alone inside. Police say that the suspect then attempted to leave the residency but the door was held by officers to avoid a confrontation.
Abbruzzetti then threatened officers and said that he was prepared to die, according to police.
Police say that they attempted using Tasers, pepper spray, 40MM sponge round launchers and a plexiglass shield in efforts to deescalate Abbruzzetti, but none of that worked. They also say that a Crisis Negotiation Team officer was on scene.
According to police, Abbruzzetti crawled through a bedroom window while holding a sheathed sword and started to walk down David Avenue before officers had to deploy pepper spray in the suspect's face and five 40MM sponge rounds. They say that the rounds struck Abbruzzetti, which made him drop his sword before he was taken to the ground and then arrested.
Officers say he attempted to resist arrest and was taken in for medical evaluation with no serious injuries.
Abbruzzetti was booked on charges of criminal threats, brandishing a deadly weapon other than a firearm, exhibiting a deadly weapon while resisting arrest, resisting a peace officer with threat of violence, battery on a peace officer and court order violation.
Abbruzzetti's bail has been set to $250,000.
