Over 500 pounds of Canadian-bound cocaine from Salinas and L.A. seized in Arizona
SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) announced Wednesday that they found a Volvo tractor-trailer Monday headed eastbound on Interstate 40 in Holbrook, Arizona with 553.8 pounds of cocaine hidden inside the produce load.
The AZDPS said that for civil traffic violations, they had pulled over the truck but upon inspection, observed "multiple indicators of criminal activity."
"Further investigation revealed the drugs were being smuggled from the cities of Salinas and Los Angeles, California, to Canada," they wrote in a Facebook post.
The driver was identified as 31-year-old Amarjeet Singh Matharu and was arrested and booked into the Navajo County Jail on charges including possession and transportation of narcotic drugs for sale, according to the AZDPS.
They said that the estimated street value of the cocaine is between around $16.6 million and $22.1 million.
