Car thief caught on camera in Salinas Tuesday night

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A car thief was caught on camera stealing a car from a Salinas apartment Tuesday night.

Now, Salinas police say that they are looking for the suspect.

Car owner, Shawn Harvie, sent in video of the car being stolen from his apartment surveillance footage and said that once he realized his car was being stolen (he heard it happen), he tried to catch the suspect.

"I got my keys and took off after him," said Harvie. "After about 15 to 20 minutes while I was on the phone with police, I couldn't find him."

Salinas police said that a report was filed but both the car and suspect have not been recovered.

"I learned today that my insurance rose by $100, too," said Harvie. He's not sure if the higher cost is related to the car being stolen or not.
