MPUSD approves teacher housing feasibility study

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District unanimously passed a feasibility study for the development of a possible teacher housing development.

The survey is being conducted by education housing services, with a budget not to exceed 195 thousand dollars.

A representative from the non-profit says that he has not seen a study like this one reach that maximum budget before.

The contractor has a history with teacher housing developments, a representative says completed communities were rented out for 25 to 35 percent less than the market rate.

Board members say they're glad to get the study moving, with the board's president, Dr. Amanda Whitmore, saying that the board has been discussing workforce housing for as long as she has been involved, happy that concrete steps are finally being taken.

The district says that the hope with this possible development is to bring more qualified staff to the Central Coast and helping them stick around for the long term despite affordable housing issues plaguing much of the Central Coast.

It's important to note that this is just the beginning of a long process towards that possible development.
