Closure on Highway 1 north of Moss Landing now reopened; CHP Santa Cruz

MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KION-TV) -- CHP Santa Cruz posted on X Friday that there was a full lane closure in both directions of Highway 1 north of Moss Landing due to a traffic collision.

They say that at 4:20 a.m., the Monterey Communications Center received a report of a head-on collision at Highway 1 and Struve Road in Moss Landing.

Monterey CHP said that a silver Lexus was traveling southbound and crossed over a solid double yellow line into the northbound lane. The Lexus, driven by 24-year-old Jimmy Cruz from Salinas, according to CHP, slammed head-on into a black Honda traveling northbound on Highway 1.

After the crash, CHP says that Cruz exited his vehicle and started to walk in the northbound land when a white Acura struck Cruz. He sustained major injuries, was transported to Natividad Medical Center (NMC) and later arrested for DUI, according to CHP.

The CHP says that the Honda driver was identified as Janeth Balianmachain, 44, from Marina, and she was transported to a Santa Cruz County hospital. They also say that Acura driver has been identified as Salvador Villacruz, 27, from Moss Landing, who was taken to NMC for treatment.

Following the accidents, CHP reported closing Highway 1 to investigate, and with the help of Caltrans, rerouted traffic through Struve Road. CHP reopened that part of Highway 1 around 8:10 a.m.

CHP Monterey is asking anyone from the public to come forward with information by calling 831-770-8000 or emailing MontereyCHPTips@chp.ca.gov.
