Skunk tests positive for rabies in the Prunedale area
MONTERY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The County of Monterey announced Monday that a striped skunk found on September 4 near Blackie Road and Rolling Meadows Lane in Prunedale has tested positive for the rabies virus.
In a press release issued Monday, the County of Monterey said that Hitchcock Road Animal Services investigated and determined that there was exposure to nearby owned pet(s). "Exposed pet(s) were placed under quarantine," said the County of Monterey. "The County of Monterey Public Health Bureau has not identified any potential human exposures at this time."
According to the County of Monterey Public Health Bureau and Animal Services, rabies is a virus that can cause a fatal illness in both humans and animals. They say that skunks and bats are the most commonly affected species, but that the virus can be transferred to domestic pets if exposed, especially if the pet isn't vaccinated for rabies.
Public health and animal control officials suggest keeping pets' rabies vaccination up to date and not to let pets stay outside unattended, especially at dusk and dawn. They also suggest taking food and water inside as to not attract wildlife, as well as avoiding human contact with wildlife, especially skunks and bats "at all times."
"Do not touch or approach animals acting strangely," said the County of Monterey. "If any wild animals are found dead, acting abnormally or ill, or if you think you or your pets have been exposed to rabies, please contact your local animal control agency."
