Vegetation fire diverts traffic in Chualar Monday afternoon

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey County Regional Fire responded to a vegetation fire Monday afternoon off of Chualar River Road.

Highway 101 was closed and all traffic diverted onto Chualar Road for drivers heading northbound (northbound lanes have reopened). Southbound Highway 101 traffic was diverted onto Esperanza Road due to heavy smoke but Lane 1 has reopened, the CHP confirmed.

Within the city of Chualar there are some wires down at Grant and Payson streets, according to CHP.

CHP also said that the fire began as a commercial truck versus power pole and the driver sustained minor injuries. CHP also confirmed that a local school had to shelter-in-place during the fire, but that the fire is now extinguished.

Smoke was seen coming from the fire.
